"Marion Market Day" 16x20, Oil on Canvas

Always exciting to capture the vibrancy of Charleston. This painting depicts a morning stroll through the weekly Charleston Farmers Market at Marion Square. The Market typically operates April to November every year. The market features local fresh vegetables, arts and crafts, food trucks, and live music.

"Food Fest Fare", 8x10, Oil on Panel

Well, this one took entirely too long to finish. I originally took the reference photo in while temporarily assigned to Brighton, UK for a consulting gig. This hard working lady was cooking up the most amazing veggie stir fry during a Saturday food festival in downtown Brighton.  And of course I bought a plateful and enjoyed it immensely in a local park.

Finally began working on painting this about 2 years ago, but set it asside until this month and finally brought it home.

Official Coast Guard Artist -221

Cindy and I just returned from a trip north from the Lowcountry which included the formal presentation of one of my paintings into the Coast Guard Art Program (COGAP) 2021 Collection. We attended the ceremony at the Salmagundi Club in NYC. 32 pieces of work representing 26 artists were exhibited in this historic artists club located on 5th Avenue.  The Salmagundi Club (https://salmagundi.org/) has been a center for American Art since 1871 and has been a sponsor of COGAP since 1981. This year's event marked the 40th year of the Coast Guard Art Program. Many of the contributing artists were in attendance at the ceremony and each of us was presented with a U S Coast Guard Public Service Commendation by RADM M. W. Raymond (Acting Director, Governmental and Public Affairs").  The 2021 works were on display at the Salmagundi Club June 28-July 9, 2021.  The image below myself, my lovely bride Cindy Widnes and my oil painting "Cutter Valiant Conducts Flight Operations" on display at the Salmagundi Club. "Vector" 8x10, Oil and Cold Wax

Experimenting with Cold Wax Medium

Recent work developed with oil and cold wax medium. These were painted on Arches Oil Paper and then mounted on cradled panels.  Quite a departure from representational work, but enjoyable none the same.

Twilight Stroll on Broad 20x30 Oil on Canvas

My recent painting "Twilight Stroll on Broad", 24x30 Oil on canvas, was awarded Honorable Mention- Oil Painting category at the Mount Pleasant Artists Guild Virtual Art Show conducted in November 2020.

Gondolas in Marion Square

Three of my paintings were accepted  by the College of Charleston's Center for Sustainable Development as one three winners in the 2020 Student Art Expression of the Year program. Each year, the artworks chosen are put on display around campus. This year, the pieces were conceived and created to help viewers connect more fundamentally with the issues of climate change and global warming – the chosen theme for the fourth year of the College’s Quality Enhancement Plan.

My series of paintings (on display in the Simons Center for the Arts) represent a possible future for the Charleston area as we attempt to be ‘resilient’ in the face of climate change and sea level rise. Sea level rise due to climate change seems all but inevitable. Expensive engineering solutions alone will be insufficient to address all the effects of sea level rise in our region. They must be coordinated with political, economic and even personal actions to address the challenge. Consequently, my project takes a somewhat cynical approach to the issue, by presenting a future where Charleston adapts to rising sea levels by returning to the Charleston ‘built’ topography of the 17th century. What are now streets and boulevards built on landfill and impervious surfaces will be reclaimed by the sea. These works represent various vignettes of a future Charleston where waterborne transit becomes the norm.
